Parents’ rights in public education continue to evolve through both new legislation and significant court decisions, creating complex legal and practical challenges for California school leaders. This webinar provides an overview of the current legal landscape governing parental rights and the obligations of local education agencies. Following an overview of the foundation of parents’ rights related to educational involvement in California, including to access student records, legal considerations surrounding parent volunteers on campus, and longstanding law as to notification regarding progress and curriculum, participants will examine recent developments involving parental notification policies, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions in Mahmoud v. Taylor and Mirabelli v. Bonta. The webinar will also review and practical guidance for California educators and administrators navigating these rapidly evolving issues.
