Each one-hour session will include a focused legal overview component followed by a practical application segment.

February 18, 2026 | Session 1: CPRA Essentials — Overview, Response Timelines & General Requests

This foundational session introduces the core requirements of the CPRA, emphasizing what constitutes a public record, who can make a request, and your public agency’s obligations. We will break down statutory response timelines, extensions, and communication best practices to ensure timely and compliant responses. The practical component will guide participants step-by-step through responding to standard requests, evaluating record availability, and preparing compliant correspondences.

February 25, 2026 | Session 2: Handling Specific Records — Personnel, Student Records & Investigation Reports

This session takes a deeper dive into complex record categories and the exemptions that commonly apply. Participants will learn how to navigate requests involving personnel files, student information, and internal investigation reports—balancing transparency with privacy and confidentiality obligations. The practical exercises will walk through scenarios to help staff apply exemptions and structure responses.

March 4, 2026 | Session 3: Current and Emerging Challenges — AI-Generated Requests, Overly Broad Requests & Serial Requesters

The final session addresses emerging and increasingly common challenges in CPRA compliance. We will discuss how to manage AI-generated requests, strategies for responding to overly broad records, and approaches for responding to serial requesters while maintaining legal compliance and staff capacity. The practical component will include specific scenario analysis to help staff apply consistent, legally sound strategies in response to large CPRA requests.
