Cal/OSHA Releases Model Workplace Violence Prevention Plan

Last year, California passed a sweeping new law requiring employers to have detailed workplace violence prevention plans (“WVPP.”) Now, Cal/OSHA has a website dedicated to workplace violence prevention, including fact sheets and a model plan (available here) that provide guidance on how to prepare the WVPPs. Cal/OSHA’s model plan is a template intended to provide the “essential framework” for employers to use as they navigate the many requirements of the law. For example, Cal/OSHA’s model plan provides examples of workplace violence hazards and correction methods that employers should be on the lookout for.

Though Cal/OSHA’s model plan provides helpful guidance, there is still a lot of uncertainty about key aspects of the law, such as, how to involve employees in required activities, such as designing and implementing training. Cal/OSHA also does not provide any guidance on ways to coordinate the WVPPs among employers, including at multi-employer sites, a key issue in today’s complex employment landscape.
