Next week, the Association of California School Administrators, the National Association of School Superintendents, and the School Superintendents Association will jointly host the Women in School Leadership Forum. The event, held September 28-29 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach, will feature a number of valuable presentations and break-out sessions aimed at helping women educators thrive in their careers. Six AALRR attorneys will be speaking at the event, covering a range of topics from how to work with challenging people to overcoming the glass and bamboo ceilings to using a growth mindset to strive for and reach your goals. This interactive panel presentation, featuring AALRR’s Tiffany Tran, Jacquelyn Morenz, and Michele Landenberger, addresses the obstacles facing female Asian Pacific Americans in the workplace. Asian Pacific Americans often share similar values or familial experiences that are adverse to the American workplace culture. The resulting internal and external boundaries often prevent female Asian Pacific Americans’ ascent to high-ranking positions. This presentation will identify these unique challenges and forge strategies for enhancing leadership skills.

GRIT: Utilizing a Growth Mindset for Success Friday, September 29, 9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m.
In this presentation, AALRR attorneys Elizabeth Zamora-Mejia and Shawna McKee will discuss the unique challenges women face in attaining leadership positions. Often, women face societal bias that affect their mindset and may create self-imposed barriers, which may result in them downplaying their accomplishments and success. This session will provide attendees with tools to assess their levels of grit and growth mindset and offer practical ways to incorporate these concepts in their professional career and towards attaining that next educational leadership position.
About the Presenters
Elizabeth Zamora-Mejia is a partner at AALRR, where she focuses on education law, providing advice and counsel to California public school districts and community college districts on general school law matters including classified and certificated employee discipline, student rights and discipline, defending school districts against discrimination claims and contract grievances, and conducting school-related investigations. In addition, Ms. Zamora-Mejia serves as Chair of the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, as well as Women@AALRR.
Barbara Ginsberg, a partner at AALRR, is an education law attorney with more than 25 years’ experience in labor and employment law. For the last 18 years, her practice has specifically focused on education law and advising administrators with regard to workplace and educational environment issues. She works closely with human resource departments, conducts workplace investigations, and provides training and coaching to administrators and managers on a variety of issues impacting daily personnel operations.
Michele Landenberger represents California school districts, community college districts, and county offices of education in labor relations and general education law matters. Ms. Landenberger’s areas of expertise include classified and certificated employee discipline, as well as workplace and Uniform Complaint investigations and responses. Her practice also includes advice and counsel in compliance with the California Public Records Act.
Shawna McKee advises school districts and community college districts on personnel and employment law matters, including discipline and termination, compliance with leave requirements, and workplace violence policies. She has experience conducting employment-related investigations and has represented public agencies in matters before the Public Employment Relations Board. She represents a variety of clients in administrative proceedings and in litigation.
Tiffany Tran represents school districts, county offices of education, and community colleges. She assists education administrators on a variety of labor and employment matters and general education issues, including workplace and student investigations; Uniform Complaint investigations and responses; conflicts of interest; compliance with the brown act, California Voting Rights Act, and Public Records Act; student rights; and employee discipline.
Jacquelyn Morenz represents school districts and county offices of education in a variety of labor and employment and general education matters, including employee disciplinary actions, leaves of absence, reasonable accommodation of employee disabilities, employment discrimination, and wage and hour law. She also assists with Uniform Complaint investigations and responses, collective bargaining issues, and defending employers against discrimination allegations.
