06.29.2016
Program: 8:00am - 9:30am
Location: Los Angeles City Club

This complimentary Professional Development Series will provide insights to address the daily challenges facing the education community.

Session 2 - Tuesday, October 11, 2016

  • Managing and Responding to High Profile Complaints – Complaints by students, parents, employees, applicants, and community members regarding school district activities can be daunting for school site and district leaders. Increasingly, complaints and concerns about schools and school employees are gaining notoriety even before a school district’s investigation through media coverage, social media campaigns, and the participation of interest groups and attorneys early in the process. In such cases, schools’ efforts to gather investigation evidence and respond to requests for information entail a delicate balancing of rights and responsibilities, all while trying to limit exposure to liability on multiple fronts. This delicate balancing of interests and related legal issues will be examined and discussed in an interactive session.

Session 3 - Wednesday, November 16, 2016

  • Best Practices for Responding to DFEH/EEOC Charges – What you do when your district receives a DFEH/EEOC charge? Preparing the initial response is critical as it lays the foundation for the district’s defense. Learn the pitfalls and how to avoid them. Through this seminar, attendees will learn best practices in responding to DFEH or EEOC inquires.

Session 4 - Thursday, December 8, 2016

  • The Art of Testifying in Teacher Dismissal Cases – This workshop will provide helpful tips to witnesses whose testimony is key to winning a discipline case. Attorneys will act out the roles of the principal players in a deposition. Between the vignettes, they will describe what’s happening and provide practical strategic advice.
