AALRR Taking Part in Every 15 Minutes Program

05.06.2014

CERRITOS, Calif. —On Wednesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 8, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo (AALRR), will be partnering with Santa Ana Unified School District to conduct this year’s Every 15 Minutes program.  Alan G. Atlas, a partner from the Cerritos office, will be participating in the program and representing the defendant during the mock trial.

Most mature adults understand the potential implications of drinking and driving and texting while driving, but oftentimes the message is lost on teenagers.  Many teens live with a sense of invincibility and will try to rationalize away the dangers of driving under the influence or driving while texting.  The goal of the Every 15 Minutes program is to offer a real-life experience without the real-life risks, thus driving home the importance of obeying the laws with regard to impaired and distracted driving.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration FARS data from 2013, “every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes.” And, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation, “Crime in the United States: 2011”, “over 1.2 million drivers were arrested in 2011 for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.”

Atlas, commented, “I am pleased to be donating my time to this worthy cause.  If this program impacts even one person, and causes them to make a life-saving choice, it is well worth it.”  James C. Romo, AALRR’s Managing Partner added, “AALRR has participated in this program in the past, and we have witnessed the impact it has on students.  We are pleased that Alan is working with Santa Ana Unified to emphasize the importance of making the right decisions when driving.”

If you would like to get a firsthand experience of this event, you can join the Santa Ana Unified School Police Department and students at 520 W. Walnut Street, Santa Ana, on May 7th at 10:30 a.m for the mock collision.  The program will conclude the following day with a mock memorial service and assembly at 10:00 a.m. in the Bill Medley Auditorium, also located at Santa Ana High School.
