Governor Gavin Newsom Names Gabriel Sandoval as Chair of California’s Fair Employment and Housing Council

01.04.2021

Pasadena, Calif.—Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo (AALRR) is pleased to announce that Governor Gavin Newsom reappointed Gabriel Sandoval to a full term on California’s Fair Employment and Housing Council (Council) and named him as Council Chair. Mr. Sandoval has been a partner with AALRR since 2013 and practices law in its statewide education and public entity labor and employment law practice groups.

Mr. Sandoval remarked, “I am honored and grateful to continue to serve in the Governor Newsom Administration as Chair of the Fair Employment and Housing Council. I look forward to working in partnership with my fellow Councilmembers, the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, and stakeholders throughout the state to advance our civil rights laws.” The Council promulgates regulations that implement California’s civil rights laws that protect individuals from unlawful discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations, in addition to hate violence and human trafficking. The Council is also charged with the responsibilities of conducting inquiries and holding hearings on civil rights issues confronting California and its diverse communities.

Prior to joining AALRR, Mr. Sandoval served in President Barack Obama’s Administration as Senior Counsel in the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education—the largest office of the federal government focused exclusively on the enforcement of civil rights in our nation’s schools and universities. During the Obama Administration, he also served as Senior Advisor and Director of Policy at the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Mr. Sandoval started his legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Carlos Moreno, then-U.S. District Judge for the Central District of California. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University School of Law where he was a recipient of a Human Rights Fellowship.
