Numerous California Cities and Counties Scheduled to Increase Local Minimum Wage July 1, 2020

With the local minimum wage in several California cities increasing on July 1st, employers should take time to verify that they are meeting the minimum wage requirements of the cities in which they operate and prepare for any increases.

Fresno, Napa, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Solano, Sonoma, and Ventura Counties Receive Variances to Push Further into Stage 2 Reopening, Allow Dining-in at Restaurants, In-Store Retail, and Other Businesses

The counties of Fresno, Napa, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Solano, Sonoma, and Ventura are the latest to join the growing group of counties which have sought and received variances from the California Department of Public Health to proceed into California’s Advanced Stage 2 reopening.  The variances generally authorize restaurants to re-open for dining-in and retailers to re-open for in-store shopping across the eight counties.  A few of the counties’ Orders also permit additional types of businesses to reopen.

BREAKING: San Diego County Obtains Variance Approving Advance In Stage Two Business Re-Openings to Allow Dining-in at Restaurants and In-Store Retail

Last night, after submitting requests to the State for approval to move forward, San Diego County became the first highly-populated county[1] to receive a variance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) which allows San Diego County to advance further forward through Stage 2 of the reopening plan. 

Los Angeles Issues Rules and Regulations Detailing Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Ordinance Requirements

We recently discussed the Los Angeles Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Ordinance (“LA SPSLO”), which requires certain employers to provide supplemental paid sick leave benefits to its employees for purposes relating to COVID-19. Following the issuance of this Emergency Order, on April 11, 2020, the Los Angeles Office of Wage Standards issued rules and regulations intended to help affected businesses better understand their responsibilities under the new LA SPSLO. With the rapid spread of the pandemic—COVID-19, employees have been sent home due to business closures, factory shutdowns, temporary lay-offs, and forced quarantines.  Other employees remain home due to their own illness, to care for someone who has fallen ill, or to care for children who can no longer attend school.  Amongst the chaos, many employees are scrambling to survive to pay rent, monthly bills and other expenses without any source of income.
