Session One: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: How it will $ave Your District. Reducing utility energy consumption through innovative practices, efficient facilities, installing renewable energy, and implementing smart technology can save your district precious funds. This briefing provides the necessary tools to help obtain the best deals, see through sunny projections, and hold Energy Service Companies accountable, to enable your district to achieve a brighter future.
Session Two: The Stimulus Bill and Using Federal Money. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“Stimulus Bill”) has created a number of opportunities for school districts to receive federal funds for a wide array of activities. This briefing will cover specific funds available to school districts as well as the processes school districts must follow to apply for and receive federal funds. This discussion will also include some specific steps school districts can take to help improve their chances of receiving funds and ensuring compliance with the federal and state regulations relating to fund management and reporting once funds are received.
Session Three: Managing Assets, Unused Sites, and School Closures. Explore practical and resourceful options for utilizing, managing, and disposing of surplus sites and facilities and the appropriate legal procedures involved. This discussion is aimed at providing perspective and direction to school districts grappling with asset management challenges due to fiscal uncertainties and declining enrollment.
Session Four: Bid Protests, Handling Claims and What to do When your Contractor Goes Under. An overview and discussion of how to handle problems and claims on school construction projects from bidding to construction, and what happens when a contractor abandons your project.
Session Five: 2010 Education Law Conference. This year’s School District Facilities Breakfast Briefing Series will culminate with the firm’s annual Education Law Conference. The Facilities/Construction strand of the 2010 Education Law Conference will include attorney panels that will expand upon the themes discussed in our March, May, July and September briefings. More detailed information about this year’s Education Law Conference will be provided in months to come.
